General Urquhart behind the Hartenstein Hotel.

In fact, by late afternoon on 17 September, the whole airborne plan had been compromised. A complete set of orders was found on the body of a soldier whose glider had been shot down. Since the airborne part of the operation was now fully revealed – Model had it in his hands by about 1700 – deducing the intentions of General Horrocks’ XXX Corps was hardly an intellectual challenge. Allowing the Germans access to the plan was a professional failure on a huge scale, but it is hard to see that it really made a great deal of difference. Surprise had been forfeited by dropping the troops so far from their objectives, but the principle intention of Market Garden must have been glaringly obvious as soon as it was evident that the forces involved were so great that they could not possibly be mere raiding parties.
